RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since the use of antibiotics in animal feed has become a critical concern worldwide due to severe threats to human health and environment, we are in need of finding alternatives to antibiotics in pig breeding, maintaining the health of pigs, and getting high-quality pork. As traditional Chinese herbs (TCH) are rich natural resources in China and show great benefits to human health we propose to transfer this abundant resource into animal production industry as additives. METHODS: Three groups of Chinese herbs (groups A, B, and C) were used as feed additives in the diet for pigs. In total 32 pigs were arranged in four groups (groups A, B, C, and control group, NC), fed in the same facility, eight pigs (one group) in each colony, free drinking, for 120 days. The feed:gain ratio (F/G), meat quality, total protein, and amino acid concentration of muscle were checked in the experiments. RESULTS: After 120 days of feeding, the feed:gain ratio (F/G) of pigs in groups A, B, and C was decreased 17.56%, 9.31%, and 13.86% compared with NC treatment, respectively. The diets supplemented with Chinese herbs improved meat quality, increased loin eye area (especially group A and C showed significant difference, P < .001), the total protein (increased ratio vs NC was A = 4.54%, B = 0.38% and C = 3.53%), amino acid concentration of muscle, increased the villus height:crypt depth ratio, and induced positive effects on serum biochemical parameters and immune function (serum TC and TG concentrations were significantly lower than those in the NC group, P < .05.). CONCLUSIONS: The use of Chinese herbal feed additives can reduce the cost of pig breeding and produce high-quality pock. The combination of these effects would contribute to better absorption ability of the intestinal tract and yield a better growth performance.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The Handan Offspring Myopia Study (HOMS) aims to investigate the familial associations of myopia between parents and their offspring. METHODS: Children aged 6-18 years, residing in 6 villages where all people aged ≥30 years had participated in The Handan Eye Study in 2006-2007, were selected for the current eye study between March and June 2010. A mobile clinic was set up in the 6 villages for comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity, ocular biometry, cycloplegic autorefraction and retinal photography. RESULTS: Of 1238 eligible individuals, 878 children (70.2%; 52.6% male) from 541 families were recruited. Mean age of the children was 10.5 ± 2.5 years. The prevalence of myopia (spherical equivalent refraction <-0.5 diopter) was 23.5% (males 16.8%, females 30.8%). The prevalence of low vision (presenting visual acuity ≥20/400 but <20/60) in the better eye was 7.1%. A higher number of females had low vision at the time of presentation (9.2%) compared to males (5.2%, p = 0.02). The prevalence of low vision in the worse eye was 10.6% (males 6.7%, females 14.9%, p < 0.001). The majority of visual impairment in the better-seeing (56/62, 90.3%) as well as the worse-seeing (84/93, 90.3%) eye was correctable. CONCLUSIONS: The HOMS examined about 70% of eligible Han Chinese offspring of Handan Eye Study participants in a rural region of northern China. Results from the HOMS will provide key information about the prevalence of refractive errors and eye diseases in rural Chinese children.

RESUMO

The first total synthesis of (±)-pallambins C and D has been accomplished in a linear 38 step reaction from (±)-Wieland-Miescher ketone. The key conversions are featured as follows: a Grob fragmentation-intramolecular aldol cyclization and a thiourea/palladium-catalyzed carbonylative annulation.

RESUMO

The total synthesis of plakortide E (1a) is reported. A novel palladium-catalyzed approach towards 1,2-dioxolanes as well as an alternative substrate-controlled route leading exclusively to cis-highly substituted 1,2-dioxolanes have been developed. A lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution was employed to provide optically pure 1,2-dioxolane central cores. Coupling of the central cores and side chains was achieved by a modified Negishi reaction. All four isomeric structures of plakortide E methyl ester, namely, 26a-d were synthesized. One of the structures, 26d, was shown to be identical with the natural plakortide E methyl ester on the basis of (1)H, (13)C NMR spectra and specific rotation comparisons. With the plakortide E methyl ester (4S,6R,10R)-(-)-cis-26d and its other three isomers in hand, we successfully converted them into (3S,4S,6R,10R)-plakortone B (2a), and its isomers ent-2a, 2b and ent-2b via an intramolecular oxa-Michael addition/lactonization cascade reaction. Finally, saponification converted 1,2-dioxolane 26d into plakortide E (1a) whose absolute configuration (4S,6R,10R) was confirmed by comparison of spectral and physical data with those reported.

RESUMO

Objective To evaluate the effect of comprehensive prevention programs on HIV,HBV and syphilis transmission from mother to child and between premarital couples. Methods HIV, HBV and syphilis were screened among pregnant women with interventional measure for infected women; HIV, HBV and syphilis (TP) were screened among premarital couples with medical advice. Results The HIV,HBsAg and TP positive rates were 8.4‰(111/13 280) ,54‰(711/13 186)and 12.8‰( 159/12 401 ) respectively among pregnant women and the total positive rate of the three diseases was 73.8‰ which was significantly higher than HIV positive rate (P<0.001). The positive rates of HIV, HBsAg and TP were 17.6‰(464/26 324), 95.3‰( 1826/19 152) and 18.6‰(355/19 099) respectively among premarital couples and the total positive rate of the three diseases was 131.5‰ which was significantly higher than HIV positive rate alone (P<0.001).Comprehensive prevention was more economical than prevention for HIV alone. Conclusion The comprehensive strategies for prevention of HIV, HBV and syphilis was feasible, effective and economical that could help to actively conduct the preventive measures.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical application of the neurovascular island flap of the calf supported by perforating branches of peroneal artery for the soft tissue defects of ankle and the foot. METHODS: The flaps were used in 27 cases to repair the soft tissue defects of ankle and the lower leg from February 2004 to December 2007. Among them, 21 cases were male and 6 cases were female, ranging in age from 7 months to 64 years, with an average of 31.5 years. There were 7 cases with external malleolus, 5 cases with medial malleolus, 8 cases with dorsum of foot, 7 cases with achilles tendon. The range of soft tissue defects was from 2.5 cm x 3.5 cm to 10 cm x 24 cm and the range of flap was from 3 cm x 4 cm to 12 cm x 26.5 cm. RESULTS: Seven cases were lightly swelling and distension after operation from 3 to 7 days. After 7 days, the swelling subsidised gradually and all flaps survived. In the follow-up for 3-12 months with an average of 5 months, all flaps showed fine appearance without fat and clumsy. The function of donor site was very well. CONCLUSION: The neurovascular island flap of the calf supported by perforating branches of peroneal artery can provide reliable blood supply, long reversed distance and wide repairing limitation and the proximal end of flap can reach to popliteal fossa. It is a good method to repair the defects of the lower leg and the foot.

RESUMO

This paper presents a "cluster" based search scheme in peer-to-peer network. The idea is based on the fact that data distribution in an information society has structured feature. We designed an algorithm to cluster peers that have similar interests. When receiving a query request, a peer will preferentially forward it to another peer which belongs to the same cluster and shares more similar interests. By this way search efficiency will be remarkably improved and at the same time good resilience against peer failure (the ability to withstand peer failure) is reserved.
